So it’s nearly been a year now since I first started this blog. It’s definitely been a learning curve! I haven’t been able to write as much as I’d have liked to. Mainly due to the minor issue of giving birth and caring for a baby! I had this preconceived idea that blogging would be easy – I’d just casually open my laptop and tap away writing a post – job done. Well I couldn’t have been more wrong. I didn’t consider the small details of photography, search engine optimisation or general promotion of posts. However, it has been interesting to learn all of these things along the way. I thought it may be useful to share some of the things that I’ve learnt so far, so here are 6 of my top tips to help get you started with your new blog!
1. Have your own domain
I think this is pretty important if you’re looking to blog long-term and you intend to turn it into a business in the future. Having your own domain not only helps with being found more easily on Google etc, but it looks more professional too. This is important for when you may work with brands. I use WordPress hosting with TSO host.com.
2. Focus on what you’re actually interested in
Blogging is very popular now, so it’s important that you’re authentic with your posts and portray honesty and transparency to your readers. Focus on topics that you feel passionate about. When someone is passionate about something it encourages other people to enjoy it too.
3. Read other people’s blogs for inspiration
It’s always a good idea to have a look at what other people are doing. Especially those who are writing about similar topics as you. It’s also good to have a look at the different layouts of blogs and get some inspiration for how you’d like yours to look.
4. Use high-quality images for your posts
I try to use my DSLR Canon camera when possible for my posts as it always gives me the best images. However, there are times when I use my phone. Having high quality images is important as it provides a more captivating post and it looks much more professional. It’s also important for when you’re sharing your blog post images on social media sites, particularly Instagram. Whilst on the topic of Instagram, always be sure to use the appropriate hashtags for your images. Have a look at what other bloggers use for similar posts or have a browse on Google for trending hashtags.
5. Sharing is caring!
Once you have written your first post and you’re happy with it, make sure you share it. This can be done through Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter etc. It’s a good idea to be part of a blogging support group on Facebook where you can share your posts and build contacts with other bloggers.
6. Post Regularly
It’s really important to keep readers engaged and the only way to do that is to be consistent. I post twice a week, but I will be posting more after Christmas. Start off with once a week and ensure that each post is of good quality. This means checking the layout and structure is clear and easy to read, ensuring your photographs are of high quality and making use of any SEO plugins. Finally, make sure you promote it!! Share across various social media platforms or stick to one that you can dedicate your time and attention to until you have time to focus on more than one site. I personally feel Instagram is the best, but everyone has different preferences. Once you feel confident with your writing and marketing of the posts then you can increase how many you publish per week. Remember, it’s ALWAYS quality over quantity.
