Healthy Snacking – My Health

I keep seeing pictures on Instagram of people undertaking new diets and showing off their ‘healthy snacks’. However, they really aren’t that healthy. It always saddens me when people spend a lot of time and money investing in a diet that I know isn’t going to give them the long-term results they’re looking for. Not only that, most diets don’t actually focus on doing much for your health, other than to give you temporary weight-loss. Calorie counting (which is what most diets are based around) often encourage people to eat high-sugar, low-protein snacks which cause havoc with blood- sugar levels. They also won’t fill you up, which is why so many people end up binge-eating on diets.

Last year I discovered a Cornish company selling a brilliant range of sugar-free, gluten-free snacks called ‘My Health‘. I was lucky enough to win one of their lovely snack boxes. Natasha Mossayebi-Maclean launched ‘My Health’ in 2016 after studying a diet and nutrition diploma. This prompted Natasha to give up sugar after years of battling a negative relationship with food. Not only did Natasha lose weight and feel more energised, she noticed her skin and hair looked much healthier and brighter. She soon discovered that sugar-free snacks are not easy to come by in shops. Especially when looking for products that aren’t loaded with chemical sweeteners. This motivated Natasha to create sugar-free snacks with a difference – containing only natural ingredients.

‘My Health’ sell a fantastic range of delicious treats. There’s a variety of high-protein and vegan snacks too so there’s something for everyone. You can purchase hampers and boxes or individual items. Natasha kindly sent me a New Year Healthy Kick Start Box to try out. I couldn’t wait to try the healthy goodies!

The box includes:

1 x Chocolate Protein Brownie – shelf life 2 weeks (can be frozen for up to 3 months)

1 x Protein Flapjack – shelf life 6/8 weeks

2 x Peanut Butter & Pecan Brownies – self life 2 weeks (can be frozen for up to 3 months)

1 x Protein Almond Butter Cookie – shelf life 6/8 weeks

1 x Pack of 3 Protein Balls – shelf life 6/8 weeks (can be frozen for up to 3 months)

1 x Pack of 4 Almond and Goji Berry Chocolates! – shelf life 6/8 weeks

My favourite has to be the Peanut Butter & Pecan Brownie! They’re so rich and delicious. I find they go really well with a herbal tea!

I also absolutely loved the Protein Almond Butter Cookie, it’s got a lovely almond/marzipan taste. All of the snacks are incredibly moreish and fresh-tasting. If you’re looking to make a positive lifestyle change this year then start by improving your snack choices. Go for high-protein, low-sugar to remain fuller for longer and to keep your blood sugar levels stable. I know there’s a lot of conflicting advice out there regarding diet and health. It can be confusing. For example, there’s a new health campaign encouraging people to stick to 2 x 100 calorie snacks a day. This is not going to help solve obesity. This doesn’t encourage people to change their eating habits as they could still eat 800 calories or more at each meal! Additionally, most snacks under 100 calories are products higher in sugar and lower in protein. They’ll leave you hungry after 30 mins! Instead, choose two small snacks which are high in protein. This could include a handful of nuts, some full fat natural yogurt, 2 oatcakes with some natural almond butter on them, a nakd bar, apple slices with peanut butter or some lovely treats from ‘My Health’! Then make sure your meals are balanced too. Opt for wholegrain carbs, beans and pulses and lots of veg! Remember to think about your changes as a lifestyle change, not a diet.
